So why go to the bother & expense of updating windows and doors?

2 Big Reasons: the First, is that modern windows and doors typically offer cleaner and more sophisticated looks that enhance the appearance and value of your home.

The Second - modern, high efficiency, Energy Star-qualified windows and doors can cut down on your heating and cooling costs - which also improves your home's value. Energy Star compliant windows feature some or all of the following:

	Sealed double or triple glazing
	Inert gas such as argon between layers
	"Low-E" (low emissivity) glass that reduces the amount of energy that the glass transmits
	Other construction features to make the whole window or door unit better insulated and sealed.

All these mean less heat gain in summer, and less heat loss in winter, with reduced heating and cooling costs. It also means no more looking through fogged or frosted windows all winter!

According to Natural Resources Canada, installing typical EnergyStar- qualified glazing and doors on an older home will save ~7% on heating costs, and about 12% on a new home. The percentage saving is lower on older homes because as a percentage they lose more heat through walls and roofs, even though the actual dollar savings are likely to be higher on older homes.
